We are conducting international activities. In clinical aspect, we have participated in the dental and medical support for cleft lip and palate (CL/P) patients in Vietnam since 2013. On the other hand, regarding research activities, we have managed research seminars with outstanding scientists regarding dental and craniofacial regenerative medicine as a member of U.S.-Japan Research Institute (USJI) in Washington D. C.
Our department takes part in the medical support for CL/P patients in Vietnam. The support team consists of oral surgeons from Kyushu University and Aichi Gakuin University, anesthesiologists from Osaka University and Takasaki General Medical Center, and orthodontists from our department and private practice. Every year, our team performs 30 to 40 operations; palatoplasty and cheiloplasty in infant patients, and secondary surgery in children or further age patients. In the future, it is considered that our CL/P patients in Vietnam need to undergo orthodontic treatment. Therefore, in our last activity on March 2015, facial and occlusal examination was performed to investigate the characteristics of CL/P patients in Vietnam. A lecture about orthodontic treatment in patients with CL/P was also held to foster better understanding about orthodontic treatment in the hospital.
